Michel Roux

Legendary chef and much-loved Quadrille author of over 20 years Michel Roux, has died at the age of 78. We are all deeply saddened to lose such an inspirational character in the food world, and feel privileged to have worked with both him and his team over the years.

Quadrille Publishing Director, Sarah Lavelle has said-

'I was deeply saddened to learn of Mr Roux’s passing – and to me he was always “Monsieur Roux”. Though he encouraged me to call him “Michel”, the informality of using his first name didn’t seem quite right. He was a man whose professionalism, dignity and knowledge inspired immediate respect. Michel was published by Quadrille for over 20 years, and in many ways he was the embodiment of that great era of food publishing – expert, perfectionist, original, writing with authority and integrity. His energy and passion still leap from the page, just as he radiated those qualities in person. I was lucky enough to have lunch with him on several occasions at the Waterside – Michel was a kind and entertaining host, with a wicked sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye. His death will leave a chasm for the team at the Waterside, whom he treated like an extended family – most of the staff had worked there for decades, perhaps only ever worked there. They both loved him and respected him, as they should; the slightest command from Michel and people stood to attention. Who else can claim to be so influential not just on food and restaurants in the UK, his chosen home, but internationally? Though there can be no more new Michel Roux books, we will look back on a collection of best-selling, world-beating food writing with gratitude and respect. Our thoughts are with Monsieur Roux’s family, and all our friends at the Waterside Inn.'
